Radial & Median Nerve Assessment – ULNT2
Radial nerve (C5-T1)
Median Nerve (C5-C7 – lateral cord and C8 and T1 – medial cord)
ULNT 2 (Median) Passive Test
Starting position:
- Patientliessupineonaslightdiagonalwiththeshoulderjustover the edge of the treatment table to allow for contact with the therapist’s thigh.
- Therapiststandsnearthepatient’sshoulderandusesthighto carefully depress the shoulder girdle.
- Therapist’srighthandcradlesthepatient’sleftelbowandtheleft hand controls the patient’s wrist and hand.
- Patient’sarmisinapproximately10degreesofabduction.
Movement sequence:
- Elbowextensionandthenwhole-armexternalrotation. • Wristandingerextension.
- Glenohumeralabductionisthenaddedifnecessary.
Structural differentiation:
Basedonwherethesymptoms(ifany)arelocated. • SameasforULNT1.

- SameasforULNT1.
Palpable areas:
- Mid humerus
- Radial sensory nerve on the lateral aspect of the forearm
Common entrapments / syndromes
- De Quervain’s tenosynovitis
- Supinator muscle (tennis elbow)
- Post humeral fracture pain
- C5-6 root syndromes
