Periodization Cycles Introduction

Periodization Cycles:

  1. Macrocycle (Months)
  2. Mesocycle (Weeks)
  3. Microcycle (Days )
  4. Session (Hours)

Macrocycle:

A training macrocycle is the big picture; the period of time needed for peak physical development. The macrocycle can span a year or more of training. It is broken down into smaller time periods to achieve component goals.

This could be further divided into the Multi Year Plan and the Annual Plan.

  1. Monocycle
  2. Bi-cycle
  3. Tri-cycle
  4. Multiple-peak

Mesocycle:

The mesocycle is a smaller block of time needed to achieve a developmental objective, for example, to increase endurance. It can cover a few weeks to a few months and consists of at least one microcycle. This is considered a training phase plan.

Microcycle:

A short-term training period measured in days that is focused on a specific block of training.

Session:

A training session is your actual workout in hours. Depending on the task, a microcycle may include two sessions a day, one a day, or two per week.
